Travel
by train
An excellent rail network and international connections make Salzburg a convinient destination for rail travelers. You may check whether travelling by train could be an alternative to flying (within limits). As Salzburg lies right on the border with Germany, the station is administered jointly by Austrian Railways (ÖBB) as well as German Rail (DB).
A Rail Congress Ticket (DB German Railways) is available for travellers starting their journey from a German train station. See options and procedure at the Salzburg Congress Centre website (49,50€ per single journey).
By Plane – Three very convinient options
1 – Salzburg Airport
Located just four kilometers from the city center, Salzburg’s W.A. Mozart Airport (SZG) is the second largest airport in Austria. You might be surprised about the flight schedule and direct, international connections including Amsterdam, Brussels, London, Copenhagen, Berlin, Paris, Edinburgh, Stockholm (…) – see here for complete Seasonal Flight Schedule.
2 – Vienna Airport
Via Vienna International Airport (VIE), Salzburg is easy to reach for travelers from all over the globe. In just three hours and without having to change, you can ride the train from Vienna International Airport directly to Salzburg. Rail connections and tickets can be accessed via Austrian Railways ÖBB. If you prefer to travel in by (rental) car, you can also reckon with a three-hour drive.
3 – Munich Airport
Munich Airport (MUC) is just a stone’s throw from Salzburg. There are excellent rail connections from the airport via Munich’s Ostbahnhof that take visitors to Salzburg in around two-and-a-half hours. Rail connections can be viewed/tickets bought via the German Rail DB and Austrian railways ÖBB. In a car, the approximately 180-kilometre drive takes around one hour and forty-five minutes. An alternative might also be to arrive via via Flixbus.
Accommodation
Despite the relatively small size of Salzburg, the city offers 20.000 hotel beds – in all categories. We do not provide hotel booking options via our registration system. Please take care of your accommodation in Salzburg yourself.
ATTENTION – fake hotel booking providers
The ESMI has not subcontracted any official service providers or “Hotel Allocator” companies – please be attentive concerning fraud!
